iSIMM seismic acquisition

The iSIMM seismic acquisition area provides released information about the seismic cruise scheduled for and completed during summer 2002.

A key element of the seismic cruise is the implementation of Schlumberger / Western Geco Q-marine technology in a deep-water environment. An illustrated description and a technical description of Q-marine technology are provided here (2023KB & 144KB):

The seismic acquisition programme was successfully completed in the summer of 2002.

  • Leg 1 used the NERC vessel RRS Discovery to acquire OBS and multi-channel reflection data in the Faeroes area. The chief scientist was Prof. Bob White.
  • Leg 2 used RRS Discovery to acquire OBS and multi-channel reflection data in the Hatton/Rockall area. The chief scientist was Prof. Nick Kusznir.
  • Leg 3 used the WesternGeco vessel MV Topaz to acquire multi-channel Q-system seismic reflection data in the Faeroes area. The chief scientist was Dr Phil Christie.
  •
The data are currently being processed and analysed.

An iSIMM publication, iSIMM pushes frontiers of marine seismic acquisition (from the journal First Break), summarizing the seismic acquisition programme, can be found in the Publications section of the site, together with a companion paper (also from First Break) describing Western Geco Q-Marine seismic results Q-Marine seismic acquisition results: report from WesternGeco.

Some images of the RRS Discovery embarking on the iSIMM cruise in June 2002 can be found by following the link here:
